How to Tell the Difference Between a Rough Patch and a Pattern
Every relationship goes through hard weeks. A misunderstanding, a bad timing, a moment where you both said something you didn’t mean. That’s normal, and on its own, it doesn’t say much about the relationship as a whole.
What matters more is what happens after.

A rough patch tends to resolve. You talk it through, even if it’s uncomfortable, and something shifts afterward. You come out the other side having actually said the thing you were avoiding.
A pattern doesn’t resolve, it repeats. Same argument, different week. Same silence after conflict, every time. Same feeling of walking on eggshells that never quite lifts, even when things seem fine on the surface.
A few honest questions can help you tell which one you’re in.
Does it get resolved, or does it just go quiet? Silence isn’t the same as resolution. If the tension just fades without ever actually being addressed, it usually resurfaces later, often bigger.
Do you feel closer afterward, or further apart? Real repair tends to bring people closer, even after a hard conversation. If every conflict leaves more distance than the last, that’s worth noticing.
Are you the only one naming the problem? One person carrying the full weight of noticing what’s wrong is exhausting, and it’s not sustainable long term.
Has this exact conflict happened more than three times? Once or twice is life. Three or more, in the same shape, is usually a pattern asking to be looked at directly instead of managed around.
Naming a pattern isn’t the same as giving up on something. Often it’s the opposite, it’s what makes it possible to actually work on the real issue, instead of quietly hoping the next rough patch will be the last one.
